Being a mom is no easy feat, especially when you’re juggling a career alongside family responsibilities. The demands of work, home, and everything in between can make it tempting to allow the kids to unwind in front of a screen—every single day. But what if we could find simple ways to help busy moms get kids outdoors and integrate outdoor time into our hectic schedules?

When busy moms get kids outdoors, the benefits are numerous, not only for our children but for us as well. At momkidfriendly.com blog—a top mom to mom blog—we understand the need for screen time now and then. However, we also understand that we busy working moms want to raise well-rounded children.

    Outdoor time can help!

This week, my children’s school took a field day to a local countryside venue. It was a private farm with a pony, a bouncy house, hayrides, a fire pit for s’mores, and lots of room to run and explore. The classes had plenty of adult supervision, as well as lots of goodies to eat and games to play.
I tagged along, and I have to admit—I was amazed at how much the students enjoyed getting into the great outdoors! It made me consider just how beneficial being outside truly is as well as sent me on a hunt for nearby outdoor activities for kids.
So, you might be wondering just how beneficial it can be. Let me explain!

Sunshine and Fresh Air for a Healthier Life

When we step outside, we’re greeted by two essential elements for our well-being—sunshine and fresh air. Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, which is crucial for bone health and immune function. Meanwhile, fresh air helps clear the mind, reducing stress levels and promoting better sleep. For growing children and harried adults, these are vital components to a healthy lifestyle.

    Imagination and Discovery

The outdoors is an endless playground for the imagination. Whether it’s pretending to be explorers in the backyard or embarking on fantastical journeys in a local park, nature provides the backdrop for countless adventures. It sparks creativity and encourages children to think outside the box, helping them develop problem-solving skills that will benefit them throughout life.

I saw plenty of this throughout my children’s class outing, and it was such an encouraging experience!
Learning about Nature and Meeting New Faces.Spending time outdoors opens children’s eyes to the wonders of nature. They learn about different plants, animals, and ecosystems, fostering a love and respect for the environment. Additionally, parks and trails often become social venues where kids can meet and interact with peers, building communication skills and new friendships.

    The Challenges Busy Moms Face

Despite these benefits, getting kids outside can be challenging for busy working moms. After a long day, it’s often more convenient to allow children to relax indoors. Plus, the allure of screens can make outdoor activities less appealing to kids. My own kids love their tablets and streaming services just as much as the next kid, so I understand the struggle!
    But don’t worry—there are solutions.

Plan a Day in the Countryside

Set aside a specific day for outdoor adventures. This doesn’t have to mean a distant getaway—local parks, rivers, farms, or even state parks can provide the perfect setting for exploration and fun. Make it a family tradition, something everyone can look forward to.

    Pack Smart

Prepare ahead by planning meals, bathroom breaks, and sun protection. Bring essentials like hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water. To keep everyone entertained, pack outdoor games such as Frisbees, golf clubs, or a soccer ball. These activities not only engage kids but can also be a great way for the whole family to bond.

    Find Kid-FriendlyVenues app

Navigating your area for suitable outdoor venues can be daunting, but technology can lend a hand. The free KFV app is a fantastic resource for busy moms. It helps you discover the best kid friendly venues that are outdoors and located near you, taking the guesswork out of planning your next adventure. Don’t forget! You can also use it for indoor venues!

Building a Community of Nature Lovers

Encourage other moms to join your outdoor expeditions. Creating a community of like-minded parents can inspire more frequent outings and offer support and camaraderie. Share experiences, tips, and favorite spots, building a network that values the importance of outdoor play.
My family is lucky in that we live near my sister and her children, so we almost always have buddies for our outings. Find someone near you who might enjoy the same types of outings and extend an invitation.

While balancing work and family life is challenging, incorporating more outdoor time into your family’s routine can lead to remarkable benefits. From health improvements to learning opportunities, the great outdoors offers a world of possibilities for your children. With a little planning and a willingness to explore, you can make nature an integral part of your family’s life. Remember, every adventure counts, so lace up those sneakers, grab the sunscreen, and step outside!
