Somehow, we blinked, and now the holiday rush is here! What’s a busy working mom to do? You might have your eye on a few holiday deals for your kids. Or, you might be totally clueless. Hello, fellow preteen moms!

Should you shop online? Visit stores in person? Try store pickup? There are no wrong answers. Your choice may depend on your budget, personality, and schedule. Each option has its own pros and cons. Let’s explore!

    Online Holiday Shopping

Online shopping has become a popular choice for busy families. You can shop from major websites or support smaller local stores from the comfort of your home.

Local stores are a great way to support your community while getting your holiday shopping done.

Pros: Online shopping can save you a lot of time. You can choose items from your child’s wish list without waiting in line, driving around, or searching through store shelves.

Cons: You may need to compare prices to find the best deal. Check for free shipping, coupon codes, and delivery times before placing your order.

Chicago has dozens of independent toy, game, and book shops. Many offer online shopping, in-store shopping, and free pickup options.

    In-Store Holiday Shopping

Many busy moms prefer shopping in person. It may take more time, but you can see exactly what you are buying. You also do not have to worry about a gift arriving late.

Maybe you simply enjoy shopping in person. It can also help you get into the holiday spirit!

Pros: You know what you are getting and can take it home right away. Shopping in person also helps you avoid surprises when an item looks different from its online photo.

Cons: You may be limited to what is available on store shelves. You may also find fewer options for coupons and special deals.

If in-store shopping works best for you, you may visit a few big-box stores. That’s OK! Just remember that local businesses need your support, too.

Some local stores go the extra mile to make shopping easier. For example, Emmerson Toys, Gifts, & Hobbies in Chicago allows customers to set up a private shopping window.

This option can help you save time and enjoy a more personal shopping experience.

    Try Store Pickup

    Here’s a little secret about me: I am a store-pickup-aholic!

When I can, I choose store pickup for groceries, pharmaceuticals, and even holiday gifts.

I’m not a huge fan of shopping. The crowds, long lines, and busy stores can be stressful. At the same time, I don’t enjoy ordering something and waiting weeks for it to arrive.

That’s where store pickup comes in.

Pros: You can order from the store’s website and pick up your purchases when it works for your schedule.

Cons: You are limited to items the store has in stock. It may also be harder to use some coupons or take advantage of certain sales.

However, store pickup can help you save money. You are less likely to make impulse purchases while walking through the store.

A few years ago, store pickup was mostly offered by large chain stores. Today, many local shops offer it, too.

Building Blocks Toy Store in Chicago is one example. The store offers pickup and can even help you choose a gift over the phone. Your package will be ready when you arrive.

    Which Holiday Shopper Are You?

So, which type of shopper are you?

Once you figure that out, you still need to decide where to shop. That can be another challenge!

The KidFriendlyVenues app can help. This time-saving tool can help you find stores recommended by other busy working moms.

Once you find your favorite stores, you can return to the app and rate them, too!

    Enjoy the Holiday Season

No matter how you shop this holiday season, your kids are sure to be excited on Christmas morning.

Remember to slow down, savor the little moments, and enjoy the season with your family.

    Happy shopping!
