If you’re looking for a quick spring or summer getaway with the kids, consider Huntsville, Alabama. It’s one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. It’s also a hub for science, art, and history.
For busy working moms, that means plenty of fun and educational activities for the whole family. With so much to see and do, Huntsville is a great choice for a family trip.
Let’s take a look at what makes the Rocket City so special!
It’s Great for Sports Fans
If your family loves sports, Huntsville has plenty to offer. The city is home to two popular minor league teams: the Rocket City Trash Pandas baseball team and the Huntsville Havoc hockey team.
The Trash Pandas play at Toyota Field. Their spring season is a fun way to enjoy a day at the ballpark with the kids.
If hockey is more your style, check out a Huntsville Havoc game. The team plays downtown at the Von Braun Center Propst Arena.
Both teams offer accessible options for families, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the games.
Another fun option is Topgolf in west Huntsville. If you have never visited a Topgolf location, you’re in for a treat.
The multi-level driving range has temperature-controlled hitting bays. There are golf clubs for different ages and fun targets to aim for. You can also order food and drinks right at your bay.
My family has visited Topgolf many times. We would give it a solid five-star rating on the KidFriendlyVenues app.
It’s a Nature Lover’s Paradise
Does your family love spending time outdoors? Huntsville has plenty of places to explore.
The eastern side of the city is near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This makes it a great area for families who enjoy nature.
One place to visit is Burritt on the Mountain. It sits on top of Round Top Mountain and offers a fun mix of history and outdoor activities.
You’ll find a 1930s mansion, a working farm, and people dressed in clothing from the past. Kids will love seeing the farm animals.
The park also has several hiking trails across its 167 acres. Burritt on the Mountain is wheelchair and stroller accessible.
You can buy snacks and drinks at the property, but there are no restaurants on-site. Pack a picnic lunch or plan to eat before or after your visit.
For a more relaxed outdoor trip, visit Monte Sano Mountain. The area has historic sites, a playground, and many hiking trails.
Kids can enjoy waterfalls, creeks, and beautiful overlooks. You can even bring your four-legged family members along. Just remember to clean up after them!
Last summer, my daughter joined a week-long day camp at Monte Sano State Park. The camp explored different trails around the park.
She came home with a greater love for nature. She also learned useful skills for exploring the outdoors.
It’s Exciting for Science Fans
If you’ve heard of Space Camp, you’ve probably heard of Huntsville, Alabama. The city is home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the nearby U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
As you drive along Interstate 565, you can’t miss the huge rocket rising into the sky.
My kids have never been disappointed by a visit to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The space museum is filled with amazing artifacts that have actually been to space.
There are also rides that let visitors experience the feeling of zero gravity and high speeds. Families can enjoy a cafeteria, gift shop, and many fun exhibits.
The center is also a Smithsonian Affiliate. It has one of the largest collections of space memorabilia in the world.
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is also home to the famous Space Camp. Kids from around the world visit for a week of hands-on learning.
At Space Camp, children learn about science, technology, engineering, and math. They also get to experience activities inspired by real space missions.
