The stretch between major holidays can feel impossible to manage. Your seasonal to-do list may seem endless. You might have a work gift exchange, a school holiday program, religious celebrations, or family gatherings.
Then there is holiday shopping. Before you know it, you may feel overwhelmed and worn out. Finding meaningful moments with your kids can be hard when there is so much to do.
This season can also bring extra stress. There are many expectations to meet, and it is easy to feel burned out.
So, what is a mom to do?
Stop for a moment. Take a deep breath and close your eyes. Then give yourself five minutes to focus on true connection.
I know this is easier said than done. However, one of the best pieces of advice I have ever received is simple: When you feel overwhelmed, choose one thing.
Pick one small task that you can finish. Focus only on that task. Once it is done, move on to the next thing.
As busy moms, we know how important time with our kids can be. Yet finding that time during the holidays can feel impossible.
That is why I encourage you to steal a few quiet minutes with your kids when you need to recharge. You do not need hours of free time. Even five minutes can make a difference.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to enjoy meaningful moments with my kids during the busy holiday rush.
Enjoy a Little Nature
Few things are as calming as spending time outdoors. If the weather allows, take a walk with your kids and enjoy some fresh air.
Is it cold where you live? Bundle up in warm coats and hats, wrap your little one up, and head outside.
There are plenty of simple outdoor activities to enjoy. You could go caroling, ice skating, or take a sleigh ride in the park.
If cold weather is not your thing, visit a botanical garden, conservatory, or greenhouse instead. These are great places to enjoy nature without staying outside for long.
Places like the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago can be a great option. They offer a peaceful setting where you and your kids can slow down and enjoy time together.
Read a Book Together
One of my favorite ways to relax with my kids is to read a story together. If your time is limited, this is a great choice. You can finish a short book in just a few minutes.
Think about your child’s interests when choosing a book. If your child loves building and creating, choose a story about robots instead of wizards and princesses.
Does your child dislike bugs? Then skip the book about creepy-crawly creatures!
If your kids are too old for story time, try listening to music together. Take a few minutes to relax and enjoy the moment.
Play a Quick Game
Games are another great way to bond as a family. You may not have time for a long game of Monopoly, but you can still play something quick.
Try Go Fish, Uno, or War. If you have toddlers, consider games such as Pop the Pig or Candy Land.
Your kids may not want to stop after one game. Still, even a short game can give everyone a chance to relax.
It can also provide a much-needed break when holiday obligations start to feel overwhelming.
Go Out to Eat
We all have to eat, right?
Taking your kids to a quiet neighborhood restaurant can be a simple way to connect. Visit a local pizzeria or a nearby mom-and-pop diner.
Family meals can also offer important benefits. They can help strengthen family bonds, reduce stress, and build confidence.
So, take a break from the holiday rush and grab a meal together. Even a simple outing can become a meaningful family memory.
Make Time for What Matters
Not sure where to find books, games, or family outings for your quiet moments together?
Our KidFriendlyVenues App can help. It is a useful time-management tool for busy moms looking for kid-friendly activities.
Instead of spending hours searching the internet, you can quickly find places and activities that fit your family. That means more time to spend with your children.
During the busy holiday rush, remember that meaningful moments do not have to take hours. A short walk, a quick game, a shared meal, or a bedtime story can be enough.
No matter where the holiday season finds you this year, I wish you peace and joy.
From one mom to another, happy holidays!
