I do not consider myself an artsy-fartsy type, nor do I have my finger on the pulse of which theatrical productions are currently being shown locally. Generally, I can drive by theaters without batting an eye at the marquees. However, my interest in stage performances was piqued after diving into an amazing experience at my local theater, the Altarena Playhouse in Alameda, California.

Recently, I won some tickets to a play at this venue. On the closing weekend, my twelve-year-old son and I redeemed our winnings by watching a Thanksgiving production. Both he and I were blown away by how funny and entertaining the play was. For all the years I have lived in town, I have been really missing out by not attending more performances!

I also learned something new: sharing the theater with my child was an amazing gift. It had never previously occurred to me how much my son would enjoy it. I am a busy mom of two active boys, so I have always stopped short of these life experiences due to my fears of unappreciation for the arts and concerns that my kiddos will be disruptive to the audience. Moms are busy, so why add more stress to our lives?

In this case, I could not have been more wrong! Instead of watching TV or YouTube, live theater is a much better option for young, growing brains, as it is educational, cultural, and mentally engaging.

How to Introduce Your Child to the Magic of Theater

Theater has a special way of sparking imagination and connecting us to stories. For kids, it can be an exciting and magical experience that builds confidence, creativity, and an appreciation for the arts. Here are some tips to help you introduce theater in an enjoyable and age-appropriate way.

    Start with Kid-Friendly Shows

Look for productions designed specifically for children. These typically have shorter run times, lively music, bright costumes, and interactive elements that keep young audiences engaged. Many theaters host family matinees or productions of classic children’s stories, making them perfect as a first introduction.

    Share the Story Beforehand

Give your child a little background about the show you’ll be seeing. Whether it’s the classic fairytale of Cinderella or a playful musical about animals, knowing the storyline helps them follow along and feel more connected during the show. You could even read a book or watch a kid-friendly video version beforehand for extra context.

    Set Expectations

For many kids, a trip to the theater is something brand new, so preparing them for what to expect can make the experience more enjoyable. Share fun details like discussions on costume design or how the lights dim before the show starts. You may also want to discuss the concept of intermission (a chance for snacks!) and why it’s important to stay quiet during the performance.

Make It a Family Day Out

Turn the experience into a full “theater day”! Grab lunch or hot cocoa beforehand to make it extra special, or talk about your favorite scenes afterward over ice cream. Creating positive memories around the theater can spark a love for live performances.

    Take It at Their Pace

Like any new activity, every child will respond differently to theater. Some may fall in love with it immediately, while others may need a bit more time to warm up to the experience. Keep things low-pressure and follow their lead. It’s all about making it an enriching and joyful experience.

    Frequently Asked Questions

At what age is it appropriate for kids to start attending the theater?

Many theaters recommend live performances for children ages 4 and up, though some productions are designed specifically for even younger audiences. Always check age recommendations for individual shows before purchasing tickets.
