Hey Moms! Plan Your Next Family Activity. If you’re peeking at your calendar and thinking about next weekend’s family activity, look no further. A few years ago, I stumbled across a great app that has come in handy more than once when it came to getting my kiddos out of the house.

The All Trails app is a fantastic tool that has helped me plan countless hiking activities for my family, including discovering some of the best Family-Friendly Trails out there—and now I’d like to share about it here on Mom’sTribue, a top mom blog!

What is the All Trails App?

All Trails has a running list of hiking trails across the globe. Whether you’re searching for Family-Friendly Trails or want a challenge, the trails are ranked by users, and lots of useful information is given about each trail. We’ve been using it this week as we plan a quick weekend away in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Why Hiking is Great for Kids and Families

You might be wondering what got me thinking about hiking. As we planned our upcoming weekend trip, our seven-year-old son asked which day we were going to “climb the mountain.” Hiking hadn’t been in our original plans, but after his request, we decided it was well worth it to fit it in. I immediately began searching for the best places to visit with kids when it came to hiking trails in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Hiking is one of the best ways to spend quality time with your children while surrounded by the beauty of nature. Here are some reasons why we think hiking is such a wonderful family activity:

    • Healthy for Mind and Body: Hiking gets everyone moving, which is excellent for physical health. It also allows kids to slow down mentally, providing a break from their usual fast-paced environment.
    • Adventure and Freedom: The trails provide a sense of adventure and freedom that kids often miss in other activities. They can explore, discover new things, and feed their curiosity.
    • Educational: Nature is a great teacher, offering kids the chance to learn about wildlife, plants, and ecosystems firsthand.
    • Bonding Time: Hiking allows for uninterrupted family time. Without the distractions of daily life, you can connect more deeply with your kids. This is something we’ve experienced firsthand over the years!

Kid-Friendly Trails in the Great Smoky Mountains

If you’re searching for Family-Friendly Trails in the Great Smoky Mountains, you’re in luck! In our search, we’ve found some great kid-friendly options to test out. Take a look and see if any sound good for your family, or search out what better fits your needs.

    Elkmont Nature Trail

Elkmont Nature Trail is a gentle 0.8-mile loop, ideal for younger children and beginners. The trail is relatively flat and features interpretive signs along the way, making it an educational hike. Your kids will love spotting wildlife and learning about the area’s natural history.
We’ve never explored the Elkmont Nature Trail, but we’re looking forward to it!

    Laurel Falls

Here’s a trail we did back in 2020! It was a pleasant hike, and you’re rewarded at the end with a fantastic waterfall adventure. It’s one of the most popular Family-Friendly Trails in the Great Smoky Mountains, and for a good reason. Laurel Falls is a 2.6-mile round-trip hike. It’s paved, making it accessible for strollers and young children. The highlight of the trail is definitely the stunning 80-foot waterfall at the end.

    Pigeon Forge River Walk

Here’s another trail we did just last year. The Pigeon Forge River Walk is great for all skill levels, and it is absolutely beautiful. It’s especially great for families staying in the downtown Pigeon Forge area who might not want to make the drive into the national park.
This trail runs along the Little Pigeon River.

It’s a leisurely 4-mile round trip, making it one of the ideal Family-Friendly Trails—perfect for families with strollers and young children or those who need a paved, smooth path. Along the way, you’ll find picnic spots, benches, and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.

Tips for Busy Working Moms Planning a Hiking Trip

Are you convinced yet to give hiking a try? Planning a hiking trip can seem daunting, but with a few simple tips, you can ensure your adventure is enjoyable and stress-free.

    Wear Sensible Shoes and Clothes

Comfort is key when hiking with kids. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain. Dress in layers, as temperatures can change quickly on the trail. Consider packing rain gear and extra socks in case of wet weather.

    Bring the Right Gear

Having the right gear can make all the difference. Pack a small backpack with essentials like sunscreen, a first-aid kit, and a map. Consider investing in quality equipment, especially if you plan on making hiking a regular family activity. Stores like Walmart, Target, Academy Sports, Dick’s Sporting Goods, or Bass Pro Shops offer a wide range of outdoor equipment.

    Don’t Forget Snacks and Water

Kids can get hungry and thirsty quickly, so pack plenty of snacks and water. Healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, and granola bars will keep their energy levels up. Aim to bring at least 16 ounces of water per person, and make sure everyone stays hydrated throughout the hike.

    Choose an Accessible Trail

Not all trails are created equal, so choose one that suits your family’s needs. The All Trails app is a fantastic resource for finding Family-Friendly Trails that are paved, accessible, or pet-friendly. You can check trail conditions, read reviews, and even see photos to get a better idea of what to expect.

Use the Free Kid-Friendly Venue App

Make the most of your hiking experience by using the free kid-friendly venue app. This app provides information on nearby parks, playgrounds, and family-friendly attractions, so you can plan a full day of fun activities.

    Conclusion

Hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains, or anywhere, is a fantastic way to spend quality time with your family while enjoying the beauty of nature. By following a few simple tips and using resources like the All Trails app to discover Family-Friendly Trails or the KFV app for local destinations, you can ensure your hiking trip is a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone.
