Have you ever felt alone as a new mom? I certainly did. After moving 3,000 miles just a month before having my first child, I knew I needed to build a community of mom friends.
Thankfully, I discovered a safe space where new moms could share their challenges without judgment and enjoy something we often miss after becoming parents: meaningful adult conversation.
Finding Community in Motherhood
Social media often shows the picture-perfect side of motherhood. We see happy babies, family outings, and beautiful moments. What we do not always see are the sleepless nights, overwhelming days, and loneliness that can come with entering a new stage of life.
Joining a moms group helped me realize that I was not alone. I found a safe place to talk about the challenges of being a new mom while also making lasting friendships.
In fact, my longest-running group text is with the dozen moms I met in my three-year-old’s baby group.
That experience taught me something important: socialization is not only about helping our children make friends. It is also about building a supportive community for moms.
When I moved again last summer with a one-year-old and a two-year-old, I knew finding local mom friends would be a priority. That is when I discovered THRIVE.
Could THRIVE Be Right for You?
THRIVE may be a great fit if:
- You want to socialize with your little ones.
- You would like to meet other moms or caregivers.
- You care for a child under five years old.
If you answered yes to any of these questions, THRIVE could be worth exploring.
What I love about THRIVE is that the program focuses on both children and their caregivers. Children get a chance to play and socialize, while moms can meet other parents and build meaningful friendships.
I attend both Open Play and a regular playgroup. Each time, my little one gets an opportunity to play, and I get the chance to connect with other moms.
Primary caregivers are welcome, too. That includes grandparents and other family members who regularly care for young children.
More Than Just Playtime
THRIVE offers more than playgroups. The organization also provides early-childhood and parenting programs designed to support families through different stages of parenthood.
Some of the programs include:
- New Moms Groups
- Autism Support Groups
- Dad’s Groups
- Working Parents Groups
- Sleep and Potty Training Workshops
- Rotating parenting and early-childhood programs
Having access to different types of support can make a big difference, especially for parents who are adjusting to a new routine or facing challenges they have never experienced before.
Quick Overview of THRIVE
- Location: The Neurodevelopmental Institute of New Hampshire (NINH), 171 Londonderry Turnpike, Hooksett, New Hampshire
- Who can attend: Parents and caregivers from surrounding communities
- Travel: Some families travel more than 30 minutes to participate
- Programs: A variety of playgroups, support groups, and parenting programs
- Cost: Many programs are affordable, with prices generally ranging from about $7 for one child to $12 for two children, depending on the specific program
Building Your Village
Motherhood can feel isolating, especially when you are new to an area or adjusting to life with young children. Finding people who understand what you are going through can make those difficult days feel a little lighter.
THRIVE reminds us that supporting children also means supporting the adults who care for them.
Sometimes, building your village starts with something as simple as taking your child to a playgroup, starting a conversation, and realizing that another mom may be looking for friendship, too.
You do not have to navigate motherhood alone. Finding the right community can help both you and your little one thrive.
