The countdown to Christmas has begun! It seems to move faster every year, doesn’t it? Every year, my family enjoys a few holiday traditions. We may not do all of them every year, but they still bring us together.

One of our favorite traditions is visiting the Huntsville Botanical Gardens’ Galaxy of Lights. It is a kid-friendly holiday attraction that brings plenty of Christmas magic to the season.

    Visit Galaxy of Lights

The Huntsville Botanical Gardens has hosted this holiday lights show for more than 25 years. Visitors can enjoy colorful displays inspired by favorite Christmas stories, including The Nutcracker, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman.

You can also see the 12 Days of Christmas and a beautiful winter wonderland. Families can stay in their cars and tune in to the event’s radio station. The lights then shine along with the music.

The gardens also offer special walk-through nights. This gives families the chance to enjoy the lights on foot.

We give Galaxy of Lights a 5-star rating! It is one of our favorite places to visit with kids during the holiday season.

Even if you do not live in North Alabama, you can find a similar holiday event near you. Use our free kid-friendly venue app to discover Christmas light shows and other holiday activities in your area. You can also read reviews from other busy moms and share your own rating.

    Keep the Holiday Fun Going

After visiting a light show, your family may not be ready to call it a night. Why not add another fun holiday activity?

    Ice Skate to Cheer

Skating in the Park is an annual holiday event in the Huntsville area. It takes place downtown, where families can also enjoy shopping, dining, and a holiday tree stroll.

Ice skating is a fun winter activity for kids. While they skate, you can relax with a cup of hot cocoa and enjoy the festive setting. You will often find holiday lights, music, and plenty of laughter.

Even if you do not skate, watching everyone try to stay upright can be fun! A visit to an ice-skating park can also help bring out your holiday spirit.

    Create Simple Holiday Traditions

You do not need a big event to create a special family tradition. Sometimes, simple activities are the most meaningful.

Play Christmas music, bake cookies, or make a favorite family recipe. You could also read a Christmas story together each year.

Not a fan of Christmas music? That is okay. Maybe baking is not your thing either. Choose something that feels natural for your family.

You could visit a local bakery and pick up some treats. If holiday scents bother you, skip the candles and add cozy blankets or festive pillows instead.

The goal is simple: create a holiday tradition your family will enjoy.

    Find Your Family Tradition

Every family celebrates the holidays in its own way. You might enjoy a shopping trip, an advent calendar, a family movie night, or a religious service.

Whatever you choose, make it something your family can look forward to each year.

We hope your holiday season is filled with joy, laughter, and special memories. And remember to share your favorite holiday traditions and recipes with us. You can also rate your favorite kid-friendly holiday venues in our app!
