Parents often find themselves taking part in activities that are fun for their children. If children were taken out of the equation, many parents would probably choose something else. Parents and children don’t always agree on what’s fun. What brings parents the most joy is seeing their children have a good time, not necessarily the activity itself.

I often think about what activities are truly fun for me as an adult. I ask myself, “If I were planning an outing just for myself, what would I choose?” There are plenty of relaxing options, such as facials or beach days. Personally, I prefer activities that keep me active.

    Mini Golf

One of my favorite activities of all time is mini golf. Every time I play, I find myself smiling from beginning to end. It’s one of the few activities where everyone has a fairly equal chance of doing well. Very few people are experts at miniature golf. Most people only play for fun.

There are no Pee Wee competitive golf teams that I know of. Another great feature is that each hole has a scoring limit. You never have to worry about one player getting too far ahead. The difference between the highest and lowest scores is usually quite small.

In the small San Francisco East Bay community where I live, we have several great miniature golf options. Two are practically in our backyard, while the third is only a short drive away. This blog shares my experiences with each one and offers busy moms a five-star recommendation for family fun.

Subpar: No Change for the Weather

Subpar is a fantastic miniature golf course located on Park Street, the main street through central Alameda. Since it is indoors, the weather never changes your plans.

Inside this impressive venue are eighteen golf holes, a full arcade, and a snack bar that even serves beer. It’s the perfect destination for both kids and parents. While the children make their way through the course, many parents relax with a drink in hand.

Subpar is also a popular birthday party venue. It is open every day, although the hours vary. Before visiting, check KidFriendlyVenues.com or the app for the latest opening times, admission prices, and any private event closures.

I have visited both during the week and on weekends. We never had trouble getting in or finding our place in line. Players move through the course fairly quickly. Once the golf is finished, don’t be surprised if your children head straight to the arcade. It’s a wonderful place to relax and enjoy quality family time.

Putter’s Goat Track Miniature Golf: All Wood for Winning

This outdoor miniature golf course is simple, creative, and fun. The owner personally built each wooden hole, giving the course a unique charm. It operates as a pop-up course in a parking lot near the waterfront in Alameda. The location is hard to beat.

The course doesn’t rely on electronic features or flashy decorations. Instead, the carefully crafted wooden obstacles make each hole both challenging and enjoyable. Part of the fun is simply appreciating the craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Compared with larger venues like Subpar or Golden Tee Golfland, this course feels much smaller. However, it delivers exactly what matters most—fun, creative holes at a lower price.

In addition to the regular course, there are several interactive stations designed purely for enjoyment. One favorite lets you place your golf ball at the top of a long ramp and watch it travel through twisting wooden tracks. My children spent nearly half an hour playing with that one feature alone!

Crowds are rarely a problem here. Just be sure to check the operating hours before visiting, as the course is currently closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The business also operates miniature golf locations in Martinez and Walnut Creek.

Golden Tee Golfland: A Colorful Day of Fun

Golden Tee Golfland is the crème de la crème of miniature golf. Located in Castro Valley, it feels a little like stepping into Disneyland. Brightly colored golf holes surround a castle, creating a magical setting.

Children are amazed the first time they see it. Because the course is outdoors, weather can affect your plans. There is also very little shade, so bring sunscreen and plenty of water on warm days.

Golden Tee is a very popular destination for families throughout the San Francisco East Bay. It is especially busy during birthday parties and weekends. The miniature golf course offers plenty of entertainment, and the on-site arcade provides even more fun once your round is complete.

As with the other courses, it’s a good idea to check current hours and admission prices before you visit.

    A Hole-in-One Family Outing

You really can’t go wrong with miniature golf. Every course has its own special charm, and each one is worth visiting. Any activity that leaves both me and my children smiling and laughing is a true hole-in-one!
